Abstract:
40 elite clones were tested by grafting on mature trees in regional experiment.19 new prolific varieties of Camellia oleifera,such as Yalin No.4 (Ju No.24) were selected based on data of oil production and fruit quality in four consecutive years.The mean seed oil (450kg per ha) obtained from new varieties was increased by 15% than the mean value from all tested clones,and was 3-5 times over the oil production in normal tea-oil tree stand available.Those varieties were the first batch of new prolific ones bred by three-round selection and regional test,also possessed great scientific merit and importance.This research solves the problems of matching elite clones in a stand.At present,large-area nurseries of scion-plucking and demonstration stands established with above elite clones played positive role in the establishment of new stand and improvement of poor old stands,and achieved significant economic and social benefits.

Callus was induced by embryos from mature seeds of Chinese fir (Cttnninghamia lanceolata Hook.),which had been cultured in MS medium containing 2.0mg/l 2,4-D and 0.2mg/l KT.After successive subculture and selection,cell colonies of the calli which were frible and in rapid growth were obtained.In the period of initial subculture,decrease of sucrose concentration was beneficial to diminishing callus browning.The cell suspension culture,which grew rapidly and consisted mainly of smaller cell aggregates,was established by transferring five-month-old calli to liquid MS medium supplemented with 1.5~2.0mg/l 2.4-D,0.1~0.2mg/l KT and 200 mg/l CH.A great amount of Chinese Fir protoplasts were released from the cell suspension cultures,with protoplast yield (9.3×105/g FW) and viability (above 80%).Enzyme mixture was consisted of 2% cellulase R-10,0.25% pectinase and 13% mannitol.

Abstract:
The study was conducted on the permanent sample plots of Pinus yunnanensis.According to the growth conditon of the trees,the individual trees were divided into 4 categories i.e.dying,stagnating,a diameter growth of 1 cm/year,and a diameter growth of 2 cm/year.The mean diameter deviation index and density index were used for modelling the diameter distribution.Simulation of the diameter distribution of P.yunnanensis were carried out by means of the model.The results indicate that the predicting model has a high accuracy.This study provides a new modelling technique in the fields of predicting diameter distribution.

Five mycorrhizal inoculation methods were tested on Eucalyptus seedlings.All of them were effective.The mycorrhizal infection percentage of seedling reached 10%~48%.Among them,inoculations of the VA mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae and G.epigaeum) and the Pisolithus tinctorius spores were best with an increase of over 103%~247% in seedling height and 180%~193% in ground level diameter than that of the check.When the seedlings were inoculated in the tubes,seedling height increased by 10%~53% than that of the check.Nursery testing results showed that the inoculation on cuttings of Eucalyptus ABL 12 with "Mycobeads" might increase 16.8%~21.9% in seedling height and 21.2%~39.5% in dry weight of the seedlings.

The solution culture with nutrient deficiency was used for Eucalyptus seedlings in this experiment.The results are shown as follow:a) Eucalyptus seedlings are sensitive to the deficiency of N,or P,or K.Typical symptom can be shown in 25 days.After 35 experimental days,the dry-weights of the seedlings which are deficient in N,or P,or K are 30~33,27~42,and 40~43 percent of that in the full nutrient solution,respectively.b) The seedlings deficient in Ca,or Fe,or Trace elements (B,Mn,Cu,Zn,Mo) also have themself’s symptom.But no symptom was found for the seedlings deficient in s during the period experiment.It is noticeable that Eucalyptus seedlings are sensitive to Mg deficiency,and [the symptom of Mg deficiency is typical.It happens very scarcely in solution culture with nutrient deficiency.

On the basis of the investigation of larch shoot dieback,it was showed that the disease is distributed in 8 provinces (districts) and HO counties (cities),according to the distribution map of epidemic area.No pathogen was discovered on seeds,seedlings,healthy fresh shoots,or branches,trunks,bark and xylem of the larch over two years old.The infected seedlings and shoots are carriers.Under natural condition,the pathogen spores can only be alive for 13 days after it was separated from the host.However,the pathogen within the host tissues can be alive 3~4 years,therefore the seedlings,scions,logs and small diameter logs should be quarantined.The sample inspection and anatomy are major measures for the quarantine,aidded by germination and isolation tests if necessary.To clear up the infected individual seedlings or/and the infected shoots of the log are the simple,easy and effective methods.

Abstract:
The die-back of pines caused by Sphaeropsis sapinca (Fr.) Dyko & Sutton widely spread in Jiangsu Province.Pine stands were infected severely in many farms and several hundred ha of pine stands were killed.It is one of the most serious forest diseases in China.Among those pines,P.taeda and P.elliottii are infected severely,P.thunbcrgii is also severely infected sometimes.P.massoniana is more resistant.The most prominent symptoms of the diease are die-back,necrosis of buds and base of the two year’s needles in Jiangsu Province.Morphology,culture characteristics,germination characteristics,sporogenous capacity,pathogenicity of the isolates from Jiangsu,Fujian and Heilongjiang Province were compared,and no difference was found among them.The pathogen of die-back of pine produced abundant sporocarps on steam sterilized needles under black light within two weeks.The temperature range for conidia germination is 5~35℃ and the optimun temperature 25℃.Spore germination needs 1% sugar solution or needle juice.Spore germination is no so good in water because air is too little in water.The pH range for myceliae growth is pH 4~10 and the optimum pH 6.Sphaeropsis sapinea is capable of utilizing para-gine as nitrogen source but is not capable of utilizing urinate.

The bostrychid powder post beetle,Heterobostrychus aequalis Waterhouse is a serious borer of rubber wood.It has 2~3 generations a year and attacks about 16 species of hardwood in Hainan Island.A control test with a new water soluble preservative TWP was carried out and the results were as follows: (1) retention of TWP preservative in wood at 1.0 kg/m3 can eradicate its egg-larvae up to 100%;(2) green sawn timber of rubber wood can be treated with 2% TWP by vacuwm pressure or oscillating pressure methods and an enduring protection effect will be obtained with a retention dose of TWP in wood no less than 3.7 kg/m3;(3) the TWP preservative is safe to human being,animals and environment for there is no chlorophenol compounds included.

The contents of some chemical materials in the needle of Pinus tabulaeformis fluctuate greatly with the seasons.The experiments demonstrate that the levels of B-pinene and phenolic chemicals ascend to their maximum in March and April,much higher than those in July and August.The needle gulped by hibernating and young larvae in March and April resulted in their higher mortality and longer life cycles.For the sake of avioding unfavorable nutrition and uneven weather in spring,the hibernating larvae practise the postdiapause transitional period through reducing feeding and keeping lower growth.They can neither recover normal development nor terminate their postdiapause transitional period until the resusciation of host plant.All mentioned above may be the suitable explanations for hibernating larvae to endure the long harsh period from the beginning of the larval climbing trees to their initiation of normal development in spring.

The Duensiform gall caused by Du-ensiform gall aphid,Kaburagia rhusicola,plays an important role in the production of Chinese gallnut.The aphid breeds ovoviviparously in all generations in its life history and reproduces sexually in spring.All the embryos of each migrant in spring and in summer grow mature simultaneously,so their reproductive period is quite short,while those of the wingless parthenogenetic females develop gradually and are produced gradually,thus the period is quite long.The fundatrix and the wingless fundatrigeniae breed in large numbers;two forms of migrants fewer;and the wingless alienicolae even fewer;while the females only one.The offspring of each generation is wrapped by a soft membrane when they are just born,except that the fundatrigeninae can not be observed,the young can be living after the membrane falls off.The reproduction characteristics of migrants are of great significance in production of Du-ensiform gall.

The result of cross absorption test and counter immuno electr-ophoresis for several species of viruses indicates that Tp CPV and Chinese cochlid CPV have the same antigenic and have at least three different antigenic determinants.Through studies on the relationship between this CPV and silkworm and several kinds of pine moths CPV,it was confirmed that the method to distinguish viruses by serological identification is feasible.

Aphrophora horizontalis,distributed on small areas south to Yangtze River in China,causes severe damage to small branches and young tops of many bamboo species in Phyllostachys.The insect has only one generation a year in Zhejiang and overwinters as eggs laid on small branches which had been damaged to death.Nymphs,feeding in cuckoo spit,can be found from mid-April to mid-June.There are five nymphal instars each taking respectively 13.75,10.71,6.19,5.78 and 12.74 days for development.Adults,occurring from early June to mid-November,suck sap from young tops after emergence and return to small branches on low parts of bamboos for mating and laying eggs in mid-September.Total death of nymphs is obtained three days after cavity injection of 50% methamidophos at the rate of 0.3ml per culm.

Successive surveys were made in bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex H.de Lehaie) groves in Dagangshan region,Jiangxi Province from March 1987 to Sept.1989 for analyzing their structure characteristics which are presented in this paper.The result shows that the unit weight of culm changes along with the age of culm.Its change rules have shown the unique style of bamboo growth and differentiation.The number of bamboos of various ages trends to be approximately the same with the increase of density while diameter follows weibull distribution,but it will be transformed to normal distribution when its stand productivity and density rise.

Wind pollinated progenies of 11 different high-gum-yielding Slash families have been tested at Xinyi County,Guangdong Province for oleoresin yield since 1986 (5 families) and 1989 (7 families).Oleoresin yield by means of chipping stem was measured in 1991 and the results showed that there were significant differences among families with age of 6 and 3 years respectively in oleoresin yield,height,DBH and crown growth.Genetic variation among families accounted for 13.08%~28.90% for basic oleoresin yield capacity (oleoresin yielded by level wound of 1cm length) and 9.70%-27.18% for potential oleoresin yield capacity (basic oleoresin yield capacity multiplied by the circumference of stem).The averaged oleoresin yield of high-gum-yielding families for both,ages was about 61% higher than those of the commercial seeds.

This paper first reported the experiment of graft combinations of 12 root stock types from 7 persimmon species and scions from 2 main Japanese persimmon cultivars (‘Fuyu’ and ‘Jirou’).Based on the growth measurement and analysis of graftlings from 24 root stock-scion combinations,D.glaucifolia Mete No.1 and D.kali var.silvestris No.6 have been identified as superior root stock types with the characteristics of strong graft compatibility,high graftling survival and fast growth rate.

On the low mountain and hilly region in South Henan,qualitative and quantitative analysis on eleven factors which affect the growth of 2~4 years-old young stand of Catalpa bungti C.A.Mey have been conducted.The results show that the correlation between the growth of the young stand and the site condition is extremely significant.The factors affecting the tree height are arranged in following order: topographysoil depthsoil permeabilityslope exposuresoil fertilitysoil textureslope localityparent rockslopesunshine conditiongravel content.The factors affecting the D.B.H.are arranged in following order: topographysoil depthsoil fertilitysunshine conditionslope exposuresoil permeabilityslope locality soil textureparent rockgravel contentslope.Among these factors,topography and soil depth are the most significant factors to the growth.We obtain the multivariate line regression equations for the tree height and D.B.H.to the eleven site factors and the major factors,and work out the forecasting table for the young stand growth.

Through measurement of the leaf quantity damaged by Ceracris ktangsu and leaf area of Phyllostachys pubecens stand in Taojian County,Hunan Province,and measurement of culms quantity on the sample plots damaged by C.ktangsu and calculation of the controlling costs and value of the young culms on the sample plots,the economic thresholds for the eggs,nymphs,adults of C.ktangsu have been ascertained.After practice,a series of technical measures have been put forward for the control.

Dimilin is a kind of anti-moulting pheromone,which does not harm to human beings,animals and the environment.Spray of 1 000 times Dimilin to control the adults of longhorn beetles in the emergence peroid on a large scale can reduce the amount of eggs by 21%,reduce the hatching rate by 26% and reduce the number of young larvae by 55%.Besides,the spray can also reduce the number of Clostera anachoreta and C.anastomosis etc.in the forest.One spray is valid for 20~30 days,which is economic and easy to carry out.Dosage for 1 ha is 300~450g and the expense for 1 ha is 9~10.5 yuan.

Studies on the seedling quality of Larix gmelini,L.olgensis and L.principis and ecological factors during the growing season were carried out in Shuiling Nursery,Hei long jiang Province for 4 years consecutively.In the population studies and analysis on light requirement of root content of dry matter and nutrient content of leaves were conducted.The relationship between population structure and quality of seedlings has been made clear.The scientific techniguc for breeding Larch seedlings of high quality has been put forward.

Abstract:
Timber assortment volume tables for Oak (Quercus mongolica Fisch et Frez.),hard hardwood and soft hardwood logs were established based on 498 Oak,437 hard hardwood and 576 soft hardwood standard trees cut down randomly.After properly dissected,volume I.B.,merchantable volume,dimension lumber volume,nondimension lumber volume,volume 0.B.,merchantable lapwood volume,lapwood O.B.,were calculated.3 or 4 nonlinear models were fitted to the data.The model with the closest correlation and minimum residual error was.selected for establishing the tables.With over 95% accuracy of both table compilation and application,the tables can be used in production.In Quanshan Forest Farm,1652 yuan and 206 working day per year were saved by the application of the timber assortment volume tables.
