Studies on the Bionomics of Aphrophora horizontalis Kato and Its Control

  • Received Date: 1992-06-20
  • Aphrophora horizontalis, distributed on small areas south to Yangtze River in China, causes severe damage to small branches and young tops of many bamboo species in Phyllostachys. The insect has only one generation a year in Zhejiang and overwinters as eggs laid on small branches which had been damaged to death.Nymphs, feeding in cuckoo spit, can be found from mid-April to mid-June.There are five nymphal instars each taking respectively 13.75,10.71,6.19,5.78 and 12.74 days for development.Adults, occurring from early June to mid-November,suck sap from young tops after emergence and return to small branches on low parts of bamboos for mating and laying eggs in mid-September.Total death of nymphs is obtained three days after cavity injection of 50% methamidophos at the rate of 0.3ml per culm.
