Abstract: Pot culture experiments were conducted to examine the response of Melaleuca alternifolia seedlings to soil texture and soil moisture content ,and the effect of different ratio of N、P、K on the growth of seedlings of the species. It was found that sandy soil was suitable for the seedlings′ growing and they throve well on damp soil. It was recommended that the combination of N:0.5~1.0,P:0.6~0.9,K:0.8~1.2(g/pot) was appropriate for the growth of seedlings of the species. Field studies were also carried out to access the effect of basal dressing and five treatments of top dressing. The result showed that basal dressing exerted tremendous effect on the growth of the young trees. It was concluded that the application of compound fertilizer Ⅱ(N 16%、P 16%、K 16%)with the dosage of 100 g/tree was the best for the growth of M. alternifolia among the five treatments of top dressing.
